What to look for in an adult ADHD evaluation
NIMH describes ADHD as a pattern of inattention and/or hyperactivity-impulsivity that interferes with functioning, and diagnosis considers whether symptoms began in childhood. So ask how a practice gathers that history: pre-visit questionnaires, rating scales such as the ASRS or CAARS, and, where possible, input from someone who knew you as a child.
Next, check how the practice rules out look-alikes. Anxiety, depression, sleep apnea, thyroid problems, substance use and plain sleep deprivation can all mimic ADHD. Practices that name these explicitly and allow a long first visit are more likely to catch them.
Ask about medication policy before you book, not after. Stimulants are controlled substances, and prescribing them by telehealth is subject to federal and state rules that have been changing. A clear answer on whether a practice prescribes stimulants, needs an in-person visit, or requires prior records saves you a wasted appointment.
